I know that actual mp3 files cannot contain viruses, but mp3 file extensions like song.mp3.exe can contain a virus, but someone told me that the last exe can be hidden.
Do you know how your computer shows you a picture icon of what kind of file the file is, like a note for an mp3 file, and a window for an exe file. But can an mp3 file with a hidden exe extension still have the little note picture icon like other mp3 files do? or will it show up as a white window icon if it's a hidden exe extension like other regular exe files are?
Mp3 Virus File Extension, HELP PLEASE?music myspace
An MP3 can contain a virus. There are exploits for music programs. Back in the day, I would use a file merger. It combines two files (say mp3 and exe) and when the file is executed it plays the music and runs the program.
Can the icon be forged: yes. That is all stored in the registry and how the computer handles files can be changed. I can make up my own extension say mp3. (note the period) and make it an executable. You wouldn't notice the period, but the file would run.
In addition a program could just apply it's own icon (say a music note).
Email me if you have any questions and want to know more.
Good Luck!

if the.mp3 extention isn't hidden on your computer for normal songs, then the .exe extention won't either, the icon however can be changed.
go to the explorer click tools then folder options go to the tab that has a bunch of check boxes (can't access for the name at the moment) then uncheck the one that says hide Known file extensions
