Mp3 player delete problems?

I stick my mp3 player in the USB port and go to windows media player but nothing happens. I open up the Snyc table and drag the songs i want to the snyc list but when i go to push snyc it doesnt work. im doing this for a friend so i dont have a manual or instructions book. the mp3 player has music on it already. if i need to delete those songs first to put new songs on then how do i do that. the mp3 player say USB connected and the screen glows up and everything but nothing happens can someone HELP ME
